• Notes: “The sweetest guy in rock’n'roll – a legend as far as I am concerned.” – Alan McGee. Robert Ian McNabb (born 3rd November 1962) first rose to prominence with ‘The Icicle Works’ when they scored two major hit singles”Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)” (Top forty US) and “Love is a Wonderful Colour” (Top twenty UK). Their eponymously titled debut album was also a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, achieving gold record status in Canada. ‘The Icicle Works’ released four albums between 1983 – 1988, all achieving top forty placing, until they broke up immediately after their swansong Blind. The other two members of the band were Chris Layhe (bass & vocals) and Chris Sharrock (drums), the latter now enjoying great success playing in Oasis. Ian went on to record one more album under the name ‘The Icicle Works,’ signing to Epic in 1989 and using session musicians in place of the now departed Chris’s. Permanent Damage was released in March 1990, but fared badly in the midst of the then exploding ‘Madchester scene.’ Ian comes from Liverpool! Ian split with Epic that same year and over the next few months he began preparing songs for what would become his first solo album Truth and Beauty. Self-financed, and released on Andrew Lauder’s new label ‘This Way Up’ in March 1993, the album was rapturously received by both fans and critics alike, finding its way into magazine end of year polls, and even making it into Q magazine’s ‘best albums released during Q’s lifetime’! Now on both a creative and commercial roll, Ian and his new record label knew they had to up the ante for the next release. Ian had written a song called “Fire Inside My Soul” which musically resembled the sound of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Andrew Lauder had suggested to Ian that it might a good idea for him to record his next album with producer John Porter, who lived and worked in Los Angeles. Ian didn’t relish the idea of recording out of his native surroundings, undeterred, Andrew insisted his idea was a sound one. Rather facetiously, Ian suggested that if the services of Neil Young’s band could be assured, he would gladly make the long journey to California. When Crazy Horse eventually met with Ian in November of 1993, they all got on famously and spent five days creating the music which would end up being exactly one half of the new record. Released in July 1994, Head Like a Rock was an immediate success. The album returned Ian to the upper reaches of the top forty once again, cementing his position of a great British singer-songwriter in the minds of both the public and the industry. Further weight was given to this fact when the album was deemed worthy of a nomination for the prestigious ‘Mercury prize’. Ian ultimately lost out to ‘M people’ but reckons he had more fun at the party than they did. For his next album, Ian decided to put together a new band. Ian christened them ‘The Afterlife.’ The resulting album, 1996′s Merseybeast, was once again a top forty success. The tour ended on a high note when Ian got to share the bill at 1996′s Phoenix festival with Young and Crazy Horse. In 1997 ‘This Way Up’ unfortunately went belly-up. Ian decided to take a break for a while. He packed his bag and flew off to Jamaica where he proverbially ‘hung out’ and gathered his thoughts. Upon his return, still reluctant to jump back on the treadmill, he accepted the job of playing bass in former Waterboy Mike Scott’s new touring outfit. He began writing new songs in January of 1998. In May/June of that year Ian was offered a week-long residency at Ronnie Scott’s club in Birmingham. Playing solo night after night, Ian quickly rediscovered his muse. New songs came fast. He decided he would record an all-acoustic album. Accompanying himself on acoustic and (very quiet) electric guitars with a sprinkling of piano and mellotron, Ian released the sublime A Party Political Broadcast on Behalf of the Emotional Party. Danny Thompson (Pentangle, John Martyn. Nick Drake) played upright bass on five tracks, while Mike Scott and Anthony Thistlethwaite (Waterboys) provided some beautiful acoustic guitar, mandolin and saxophone between them. The stark confessional nature of the songs, combined with the stripped down approach produced a work of dazzling intensity. …the Emotional Party was released with little fanfare in October of 1998, accompanied by the longest tour Ian had yet undertaken in the UK. It was, once again, warmly received by all concerned and fared well, though not achieving a chart placing this time. A late 1999 show at Liverpool’s Life Cafe resulted in a live acoustic recording released as Live at Life. The album features a mix of McNabb classics as well as Icicle Works favourites. Originally only available in limited quantities, this disc was later released by Ian’s new label, Sanctuary. The full-tilt rock band appeared once again on McNabb’s eponymous album released in April 2001 on Sanctuary. This album is a relatively short collection of rocking numbers that express Ian’s love for classic 60s and 70s power pop and rock, with clear nods to the likes of Badfinger, the Who, T Rex, the Beach Boys, and others. It is largely a no-holds-barred rock explosion, through which Ian’s knack for melody and pop sensibility always shines through. Ian broke with Sanctuary due to their ongoing U.S. distribution troubles. Teaming up once again with Andrew Lauder, this time under the name of Evangeline Records, Ian released a collection of unreleased and demo material that the fans had been clamoring for over the years. Waifs & Strays consists of material from 1993-2000 and demonstrates Ian’s ability to craft winning songs – and then not release them for years. Originally seen as a ‘fans only’ disc, this album surprised everyone by selling strongly well beyond the circle of die-hard fans, demonstrating McNabb’s widespread appeal. The Gentleman Adventurer, a fourteen track album featuring Ian playing almost all the instruments himself was quietly released in 2002, available firstly only on mail order, although proving popular enough outside of Ian’s dedicated fanbase to eventually receive a high street release. This album contained many fine songs including the enduring in-concert favourites “All Things To Everyone” and “Lady By Degrees”. Ian also used whizz-kid-up-and-coming producer/engineer Mike Cave (The Charlatans/John Martyn) on these sessions, who has appeared to breathe life into recent recordings, and continues to work with Ian up to the present. July 2004 saw the release of Potency – The Best Of Ian McNabb. A long overdue career summary of his post-Icicle Works years, and a fine introduction for the uninitiated. It also featured a bonus disc of rarities, b sides and outtakes. Ian’s 2005 album, Before All Of This, was previewed by the top 40 single “Let The Young Girl Do What She Wants To.” This was Ian’s first ‘hit’ in 21 years proving there’s life in the old dog yet. The album was divided into two distinct acoustic and electric ‘sides’ and featured the enchanting backing vocals of Wirral born singer Livia Johnson, as well as powerhouse drummer Steve Barney (Annie Lennox, Jeff Beck). Long time cohort Roy Corkill returned for bass duties. In Autumn 2006 Ian resurrected The Icicle Works for a sold-out 25th Anniversary tour. Ian’s autobiography “Merseybeast” was published in October 2008 and was greeted with platitudes from both critics and fans. But not ex-girlfriends….. Ian spent January through June of 2009 recording hi new album “Great Things’ which is due to be released in January 2010. It will be preceded by a single “New Light’ which features Ian’s old friend Mike Scott (The Waterboys) on guitar and backing vocals. Ian will be touring the UK extensively from September until Christmas 2009. Ian has been a professional musician since the age of fifteen, when he used to play at workingmen’s social clubs in the northwest of England, although he now reckons he’s only just getting started. • Notes: It’s a long way from south Mississippi, where she was born, to Glastonbury, in southwestern England. But Lisa Mills has played Glastonbury and many more European festivals enough to feel comfortable on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact, the artistic connections she formed as she gained international fans are counted as her musical next-of-kin; they just happen to be in the UK, while she now makes her home on Mobile Bay. Recording her latest album, Tempered in Fire, at Rimshot Studios in Kent was a celebration of creative connections reaching near and afar. She chose songs by writers from her native South as well as Britain to complement her own songs and teamed with old and new musician friends from England and the U.S. Joining her in the vintage analogue studio—and laying down several of the songs as a live band—were her long-time performing partner, Ian Jennings, co-producer and double bass; Andy Fairweather Low on guitar, and Eric Heigle of New Orleans on drums. She and Jennings (Big Town Playboys, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison) have toured the UK for almost a decade, and she sings three tracks on his current studio album, Roll the Dice. It was through Jennings that she met Low (Amen Corner, Eric Clapton, George Harrison) and many others with whom she’s shared stage or studio, including Robert Plant, Jools Holland, and Jeff Beck, who also are guests on Jennings’ album. Lisa grew up on gospel and soul and began composing songs before she was old enough to start school. Her daddy was dialed in to Hank Williams and her mother loved Elvis (and still does: she keeps The King’s CDs along with her daughter’s on her car’s sun visor). Destined to perform, Lisa poured her heart into writing, singing and playing guitar, gathering strength like the hurricanes that brew in the Gulf of Mexico. Her vocal influences ranged from Etta James to Brenda Lee. A friend who recognized Lisa’s potential sent Sam Andrew of Big Brother and the Holding Company a copy of Blues and Ballads, her first CD, recorded live in Pascagoula, Mississippi. It was the connection that landed Lisa her first international gig, in Germany, and a three-year tour as BBHC’s lead singer. It was the European connection that led her to meet Jennings and then Robert Plant’s sound engineer Roy Williams, who encouraged her to take her rightful place as a solo artist. Along the way she has played with Delbert McClinton, Dr. John, Junior Wells and appears on a compilation CD, Live at the Talbot, with Albert Lee. Touring the UK in 2010 after the release of Tempered in Fire, Lisa was featured on the cover of Blues Matters magazine (along with none other than Plant and the Rolling Stones). Grahame Rhodes, writing for Blues in Northwest, described her as having “a stunning voice that comes over like a full-throated Otis Redding with some Muscle Shoals soul and Nashville country touches for good measure.” Reviewing her Edinburgh performance, Rhythm and Blues noted her “strong soulful voice,” adding, “Lisa Mills is an artist to watch out for.” Tempered in Fire was her second album collaboration with Jennings, who co-produced her 2005 I’m Changing. Her solo preproduction CD, “By Invitation Only,” also recorded live, drew high praise from Wade Wellborn of Currents Magazine. “These dynamic and inspiring performances help prove that Lisa Mills is the real deal; no studio tricks needed, no airbrushing required. By Invitation Only is a wonderful listen—soothing, bluesy, rocking, and sexy.” Add “songwriter” to Wellborn’s descriptions (she wrote all 13 songs on By Invitation Only), and you’ve got Lisa. Look for her upcoming summer 2011 UK tour with Jennings and her performance at Colne Blues Festival or catch her in the states where she is coming full circle, making connections with gifted musicians who share her Southern roots. • Notes: Mik puffed his cheeks out and began… A long time ago in Beeston, South Leeds little Mickie Gallagher discovered the joy’s of drawing cowboy’s and spacemen and superhero’s…no girls allowed. After a turbulent career in insurance, oil and construction Mik ended up where he should have gone in the first place, Bradford Art College. Then he left having played with ink, tape-recorders, punk and obscure eastern european cigarettes. More construction work followed as his art career floundered then in January 1983 Mik found his vocation, the brown paper bag and the biro became his tools as he wandered from Leitrim to London doing portraits. A degree in theology rounded everything off nicely… Mik lost his marriage and everything… A new dawn broke on some morning in May Nov 94 when Mik trod the boards for the first time as Mik Artistik surrealist, semi-finalist, performance poet, stand-up, performer…phew!!! 2004. Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip was born. 2008. In the last 14 months or so, we, the undersigned, Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip played with Faust, Chumbawamba, did Latitude, and at Glastonbury sold over a thousand quids worth of albums…thank you. We got on Rock Fm in September and cars were crashing as people got so distracted by our tunes. October, the Idler magazine took us on as the light of the world, we played their bash and left grown men like Zodiac Mind Warp, Tom Hodgkinson and the drummer from the Jesus and Mary Chain weeping with joy. The Colony Room Club in Soho, home of Francis Bacon, George Melly and all the Brit Artists this year experienced the full force of the Ego Trip and bowed down! Big thanks to Radio 1, to Rob da Bank for playing “Window Cleaner”… and we got on the footie programme on Radio Leeds. 2009/2010 What a blaster of a year! Eighteen festivals an art exhibition and we still havn’t won the Mercury Prize… or the Uranus Prize…or the Turner Prize. We’ve added a Todd Rungren / Paul Young element to our sound and hope that this will bring us bounteous rewards. A lot of big things on the 2012 horizon

• Notes: The Verge is really chuffed to welcome back Martin Stephenson. Born 27 July 1961, County Durham, England. This singer-songwriter’s reputation has been bolstered by virtue of countless searing live performances throughout the UK. His early love of literature and music led to the formation of the first Daintees line-up in his early teens. With a regular turnover of staff and lack of proper gigs, the band nevertheless became something of a busking sensation, on the evidence of which Newcastle record label Kitchenware sent them into the studio. After two singles, notable among which was 1982′s intoxicating “Roll On Summertime”, a debut album was embarked upon. The Daintees line-up at this time comprised Stephenson (guitar, vocals), Anthony Dunn (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals), John Steel (keyboards, harmonica, bass, vocals) and Paul Smith (drums, percussion). Boat To Bolivia, released in 1986, was praised by the New Musical Express because it “builds bridges between love and hate, between cradle and grave, between folk and pop, between the past and present”. The candidness and honesty of Stephenson’s lyrics were best portrayed on “Caroline” and “Crocodile Cryer”. He also revealed his appreciation of the folk/blues rag guitar style with “Tribute To The Late Reverend Gary Davis” as well as regular live performances of Van Dyke Parks’ “High Coin”. A lengthy hiatus delayed the arrival of the follow-up until 1988. Gladsome, Humour & Blue contained the superb “Wholly Humble Heart”. Once again, reviews were excellent, and Stephenson enhanced an already impressive reputation for hearty live shows. Salutation Road proved to be the songwriter’s most politicized work, prefaced by the single “Left Us To Burn”, which directly attacked Margaret Thatcher. Two further albums with the Daintees were released by the Kitchenware label, before Stephenson embarked on a solo career with a series of acclaimed releases for Demon Records. In the new millennium, he released a series of mail-order only acoustic projects. He also records and tours with his swing outfit the Toe-Rags and, from time to time, a new line-up of the Daintees. A gig not to be missed.

• Notes: Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record. It was a determined young man who walked through the doors at The Hit Factory NYC in December 1990, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records. A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp returned to New York City in 1992 to perform for an audience of 25,000 gathered in Central Park to celebrate the 80th birthday of folk legend Woody Guthrie. It was a seminal event for Dave Sharp who performed alongside Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg and shared the stage with The Right Reverend Jessie Jackson. In 1996 Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston entering Credence Clearwater Revival’s studio in San Francisco to record and release his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network. Sharp returned to the UK in 2002 to record his third solo album, The Power of Soul, released on Manchester’s Townsend Records, successfully re-introducing him to British audiences and earning him solo recognition across the UK with British music critics. Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. Whether solo or with a band, guitar in hand, Dave Sharp delivers the ”Spirit of Rock & Roll.” His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as everything from legendary to lousy.
